Catch Me If You Can

Design Process

Frank Abagnale Jr.

Through Frank’s costume design, I aimed to illustrate his growth and transformation throughout the story. He begins the show in an ill-fitting school jacket, reflecting his youthful inexperience, and concludes in a more sophisticated, tailored turtleneck and jacket, symbolizing his maturity and growth. The costumes are rooted in historical accuracy, emphasizing that Frank is a real person navigating a very real journey.

Hanratty

For Hanratty’s costume, I chose an authentic 1960s vintage suit to emphasize his grounded, no-nonsense nature. As the character most rooted in reality, he even breaks the fourth wall to address the audience. His look contrasts with the rest of the cast, helping him stand out as a steady presence amidst the show’s dynamic energy

Brenda Strong

Brenda Strong is a strong, independent woman who stands apart from the rest of the ensemble. While the ensemble is dressed in costumey, provocative costumes, Brenda’s look is firmly rooted in reality. In the hospital scene, where Frank imagines a fantasy of sexy nurses, Brenda stands out in an authentic 1960s-era nurse’s dress, emphasizing her intelligence and talent over superficial allure. Unlike the idealized, provocative versions of women Frank encounters, Brenda captivates him with her genuine qualities.
